OpenOffice's default file format is the OpenDocument Format (ODF), but it can also read a wide variety of other file formats, with particular attention to those from Microsoft Office.
So if you are someone who does not have Microsoft products on your computer OpenOffice is a cheap alternative for creating Microsoft compatible files that you can use on computers at school, library, home, etc.
